How To Get Whatever You Want

May 30, 2008

If you can a company to really cancel a service, credit card, or subscription they will give you WHATEVER YOU WANT to stay.

I recently tried to cancel my Sirius satellite radio. After you get used to the stations you realize that much like regular radio stations they play the same 100 songs over and over. So I had enough, and did not want to pay for it anymore.

Cancellation attempt #1:
Internet, no go of course. You can add services out the ying yang, but cant subtract them……. Odd

Cancellation Attempt #2
Phone, I spoke to a really nice woman from Canada, we talked she was probably close to my age group and was pretty cool about it. I told her I did not really like it all that much, and it was not really worth it too me. I car pool half the times anyways…… She offered to give me a home set up system to stay. Ok ill stay I love free stuff in the mail. Its like 100 bucks retail I can always sell it on eBay or Craigslist.

Cancellation Attempt #3
Phone, I go the home stereo its cool, but I only used it for 30 seconds after I set it up. I have millions of songs on my Ipod, Pandora rocks for at home listening, and there is always regular cds and radio. Here is the abbreviated version of our conversation.

JonBon: Cancel it.

Customer Service: Free car kit?

JB: Got it, Cancel it.

CS: Free installation of your existing car kit?

JB: Already installed, Cancel it.

CS: Free Month?

JB: Cancel it.

CS: More variety with XM after the merger?

JB: See above comments
CS: Anything we can do to keep you?

JB: No Cancel it

Success!!!!

Moral of the story, if you are going to discontinue your business with a company, you can pretty much set your own price and terms. This is true with credit cards, banks, and anyone who charges you on monthly basis. I would love to pay less for my cable, but I enjoy it too much to give it up. Any suggestions on how to make Time Warner take less of JonBon’s money?

Taking The GMAT

May 29, 2008

Tomorrow I am taking time off work to go and sit for the GMAT, aka Graduate

Management Admission Test. It is a 4 hour test and costs around $250 to take. For those of you who don’t know, the GMAT is the SAT for Graduate school. It’s the other factor along with undergraduate grades that they use to assess your intelligence.

I have been looking over the test material and format. The GMAT has several kinds of questions that are unique to the test and cannot be found anywhere else. Obviously it would pay off to do a bit of research and studying before taking the test, it could raise your score significantly.

Hopefully I get a decent score on this test and will be able to apply and be accepted to The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business. It is where I got my undergrad, and I am actually looking forward to going back.

Now if I got my MBA tomorrow, my job would not give me a penny more, but at the same time they would happily foot the entire bill of around $60,000 for the degree. The relative “value” of an MBA is many times more then that. There is no definite figure on how much more a person would make if they held an MBA over just a bachelors degree. But the law of averages says that on an aggregate level MBA holders can make 500,000 more then those without the degree.

Wish Me Luck!

Refinishing Furniture

May 16, 2008

I spent last weekend refinishing a coffee table that I had gotten free from a co-worker (insert shout out to Kerry here). I had just spent a grand on a decent sectional and was not thrilled about spending several hundred more on a coffee table. I asked around at work and someone had one that they were willing to give me for free.

I brought it home on a Friday and set up my laptop on it and ate a sandwich. It was an immediate improvement from eating off of one of my dining room chairs. (As you can probably tell by that last statement, I am not married.) On seeing it I starting thinking about refinishing the table itself. I had never done it before and figured it would be a good project to try my hand at.

So I bought a little medium grade sandpaper and sanded the finish off a corner to see what the wood looked like. It’s a solid wood table, and I figured sanding it would be a lot more fun then stripping it. I mentioned this to Elie and she let me know that I was getting power tools for my birthday (badass!) and could give me the power sander early.

So now we are cooking. I spent about $25 at the hardware store on extra sandpaper, cheesecloth, finishing stain, brushes, and steel wool.

I busted out the power sander and went to work grinding down the old beat up stain and varnish. It was fun work and it went pretty quickly on the flat surfaces at least. On the round table legs I probably spend more time on 1/10 the surface area then the whole table top. But I finished them as well with the help of Elie.

I was able to put two coats of stain on the table top and one on the legs and underside because I am lazy. I gave it about a day to all dry, took it home and put it together.

I think that it looks really good for my 1st attempt at finishing a piece of furniture, and it was free to boot! Not  a bad way at all to spend two Saturdays while listening to the Reds lose on the radio (they suck!)

The finished product with my extensive remote collection

This was a project that took me longer then I anticipated, was decently inexpensive, and lots of fun. I think I will hit up the garage sales this summer to see if I can find end tables that I could refinish and stain to match my sweet coffee table.

I guess the moral of the story is that new wood furniture is a bust. You can easily find an old beat up table at a garage sale, thrift store, or just by asking around like I did. Finishing it is relatively easy even for a novice, and requires a few tools, and about $30 bucks. I think the cost would go way down for the second piece of furniture because I already have most of the supplies. It has been a pleasant surprise to see how it turned out, and the pride that I took in working on it.

Beer Drinking

May 15, 2008

It is one of my favorite activities. I personally don’t think that I drink “cheap” beer, but others might. I am mainly a Bud Light guy, having an occasional Sam Adams or Guinness when I am feeling classy.

Here is a good article about Beer and the effect that the slumping economy is having on the brewers in this country. I don’t see myself switching back to my beer “alma matter “ Natural Light aka Natty, but it probably would save me money if I was actually willing to downgrade the quality of my beer.

How the Banks and Financial Institutions Got Us Into This Mess

May 9, 2008
This is the best (and funniest) presentation that I have ever seen on the role that Banks and Financial Institutions  played in screwing up the housing market, and the economy as a whole.

Where is My Rebate Check?

May 2, 2008

The Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 will give most of us $600, and if your married filing jointly $1200. There has been a lot of talk about the amount and the timing of the rebate. The rebates are being handed out in order of the last two digits of your social security number. If you choose to direct deposit the following payment schedule applies.

Last two SSN digits:  Payments will be transmitted no later than:

 00 through 20  May 2

 21 through 75  May 9

 76 through 99  May 16

If you don’t believe me it can be found directly on the IRS website. If you paper filed it will take longer, but I did not paper file so I don’t care when those payments are disbursed. Lots of stores are fighting for you to spend your rebate at their establishments. Many will even give you a 10% bonus if you cash in the entire amount for a gift card.

I will not be doing that. I am being pretty lame and saving mine for my upcoming June trip to Europe. As of right now $600 will buy me around €389 hopefully enough for a week in Paris.
